Actual rating: good (3 votes). Your opinion on Pridi by Pridi:
Pridi Banomyong :-
Organized the overthrow, in 1932, of absolute monarchy in Thailand.
Formed the movement that fought the Japanese in WW2.
Became Thailand's Prime Minister.
Fought military dictatorship and died in exile.
Pridi Banomyong was one of the greatest figures in twentieth-century Thailand. He started the movement that led to the 1932 revolution against Thailand's absolute monarchy and later introduced a wide range of political, economic and legal reforms. He formed the Seri Thai resistance movement against the Japanese occupation. From 1947 onwards, Pridi was opposed by US-backed militarists who seized power by coup, murdered his associates, overturned many of his liberal reforms, and established dictatorial rule. In 1949 he fled into exile and never returned.
Pridi by Pridi contains nineteen selections from Pridi's writings, speeches and interviews from 1932 to 1949, including a new translation of his outline economic plan of 1932 and the first-ever translations of his most important writings about the 1932 revolution, the Seri Thai movement, the monarchy and his contemporaries.
The selections have been translated by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit, authors of Thailand: Economy and Politics and Thailand's Boom and Bust. Their introduction discusses Pridi's historical contribution and controversial legacy. This timely volume marks the centennial of Pridi's birth.
